Since 2001, the Opéra en Plein Air, an atypical and unique project, has built a new relationship with operatic art with a view to reaching an audience not often seen in opera houses.
It is atypical and unique as, every season, a masterpiece from the operatic repertoire is created in exceptional historical sites, directed by music-loving figures who move away from their discipline to devote their talent to opera.
Gérard Corbiau, Julie Depardieu, Arielle Dombasle, Julie Gayet, Christophe Malavoy left their mark on our spectators with their creations presented at the Hôtel National des Invalides, in the Carcassonne Medieval City, at Domaine de Sceaux, Château de Vincennes, etc.
In 2019, Puccini’s TOSCA, directed by Agnès Jaoui and conducted by Yannis Pouspourikas, attracted 25,000 spectators, with 13 performances on 5 heritage sites including Carcassonne. In 2020, the operatic adventure continues with a new production of MADAME BUTTERFLY, Giacomo Puccini’s melodramatic masterpiece.
During a trip to London in 1900, the famous Italian composer of LA BOHEME and TOSCA discovered a compelling US play. He was deeply affected by the story of the young geisha married to a US officer and abandoned with their baby. It inspired Giacomo Puccini to write his new opera. While the première was chaotic, the revised version was a triumph. And MADAME BUTTERFLY has become, since 1904, one of the most popular works in the operatic repertoire.
